THE PARENTS OF DIETRICH BONHOEFFER

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was the sixth of eight children. He had four sisters and three brothers and, along with his twin sister, he was born on February 4, 1906, in Breslau, Germany. When he was six years old, the family moved to Berlin, where his father, Karl Bonhoeffer, became Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry and the Director of the university neurological clinic.

His mother, Paula Bonhoeffer…was a committed Christian, who had grown up as the daughter and granddaughter of theologians. She was lively, cheerful, and full of dreams. She could overlook the minor mistakes of her children, but she would not tolerate inconsiderateness and unkindness to others (4-5).
