Bonhoeffer returned to Germany in 1930–to a country on the brink of political upheaval.  In addition to his work as an instructor (Privatdozent) at the university, he became the chaplain for students at the techical school.

During this period, he also began his ecumenical work.  He was selected to be the youth secretary for the World Alliance for Promoting International Friendship through the Churches.
