Greetings! My name is Bryan Galloway. I am the senior pastor of Harvey Oaks Baptist Church in Omaha, NE.
Allow me to explain this blog. It is part of my thesis-project for my Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree through Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA. My D.Min. track is called “The Preacher and the Message“; and it is under the leadership of Dr. Haddon Robinson (see photo on right side of page). I began this program in March of 2004 and graduated in May of 2009.
The theme for the thesis-project is “The Impact of Dietrich Bonhoeffer on Twenty-First Century Preaching and Preachers.” The purpose of this blog is to introduce six areas where Bonhoeffer can make an impact on preachers and preaching.
On top of that, this blog will attempt to receive feedback from preachers and pastors. In other words, as I present the six areas of impact over the next few days and weeks, I will be asking my readers to respond through an evaluation form.
Of course, there may be people who do not know who Bonhoeffer is or they know very little about him. Thus, my first posts will focus on who Dietrich Bonhoeffer and why his life and works are important.
I would love any comments and/or questions about this project. Please comment on any post or e-mail me at bryan@harveyoaksbaptist.org.

I just finished reading Metaxas’ bio of Bonhoeffer. Whatever happend to his fiancée? From googling her..all I can find out is that she came to Boston…apparently married…but not much else pops up.

I am finishing up Metaxas’ bio now and came across this blog after searching for Maria von Wedemeyer. I understand that she went to Bryn Mawr College in 1948 to study mathematics and did well in the computer field. She lived until 1977. Her married name was Weller. Here’s a bit more information: http://www.awesomestories.com/assets/maria-von-wedemeyer-photo.
Recently, I have found some book reviews that have disappointed me, which try to determine whether Bonhoeffer was a martyr or not, and conclude that he was a war hero. Others label him as a liberal or evangelical. I think the terms liberal and evangelical meant different things in mid 20th century Germany and in America today. It is best that Bonhoeffer is known as a Christian first and not quibble about what categories to put him in.
I will come back to this blog again before I write a book review on Bonhoeffer.

Eight years ago my pastor mentioned Bonhoeffer in his sermon. I had never heard of him until then and I made a point to find out about him. Since then I have read much of his work and it has helped to make my spiritual life more meaningful, especially his, The Cost of Discipleship.
I have just begun reading Metaxas’ bio of Bonhoeffer.
I wish you well in completing your doctorate.
