Dietrich Bonhoeffer‘s use of Stellvertretung cannot be understood apart from his claims about “Christ existing as community.”  The idea that God is revealed through the incarnate Christ in community is predicated on Christ’s vicarious action on behalf of the community, as well as on the way that Christ’s action enables each member of the community to act vicariously on behalf of the others (Stephen R. Haynes and Lori Brandt Hale, Bonhoeffer for Armchair Theologians, 108).

Simply put, do we treat our fellow Christians in the same way as Jesus would?
