On September 19, 1941, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote a letter to the Leibholz Family. He responded in kindness to a cable he received from the family. In the letter, Bonhoeffer shared how his optimism for peace and dependence on God were growing…

May God grant that all these terrible sufferings will make men mature for a better future. I personally, do believe it, and I am optimistic enough to hope that peace is not so far off as it sometimes seems to be.

For my part, I hope to find sufficient time to finish a book on which I have been working on for about a year now (Ethics). But who may dare to make plans now for a long time? One must take the day as God gives it. It is a great thing to learn to rely entirely on God’s will and help (Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works: Volume 16: Conspiracy and Imprisonment: 1940-1945, 217).
