After the Enabling Act was signed, Adolf Hitler ordered that a boycott of Jewish stores in Germany. This boycott took place on April 1, 1933. On that day, Julie Bonhoeffer, the 90 year old grandmother of Dietrich Bonhoeffer was not to be told what shops she could or could shop in.
When SA men tried to restrain her from entering one store, she informed them that she would shop where she liked and did so. Later that day she did the same at the famous Kaufhaus des Westens, the world’s largest department store, ignoring the silly kickline of SA men stationed in front. The story of Julie Bonhoeffer marching past Nazi gorillas was a favorite in the Bonhoeffer family, who saw an embodiment of the values they sought to live by.

I’ve been listening to Eric’s book, it’s just blowing my mind (and taking forever because there’s so much history, which I always have to go read more about). I was just looking at the grave for his parents, and there was what looked like a much newer stone there as well, but for Julie.
I had forgotten her name – but yes! Oh how I clapped, listening to the part you quoted above.
Incredible family. Horrible time, so many losses. I know however, that they had a joyful reunion in heaven. Thank you for sharing this about Dietrich ‘s wonderful Grandmother. I hope I will always be brave, like this family. Because of Jesus.
