After the failed attempt on Hitler’s life failed on July 20, 1944, Dietrich Bonhoeffer seriously considered to escape from the Tegel prison…

Initially, Hitler had executed ammediately all those who were arrested in connection with the plot of 20 July, which meant that the authorities could not use them to uncover further circles in the conspiracy. In Tegel Bonhoeffer now started to consider seriously then until then only vaguely formulated plan for escaping and going underground. His guard, Corporal Knobloch, a North Berlin working-man, who had also passed on his secret correspondence, was ready to make a run for it, with Bonhoeffer disguised as a mechanic… (Costly Grace, 128)

But that plan would never materialize
