When Dietrich Bonhoeffer was in New York in 1939, he agonized about his decision to leave Germany for a more comfortable situation abroad. In his journal, he wrote:
We cannot escape our destiny; least of all out there…It is strange how strongly these particular thoughts occupy my minds these days…
